About Joining ScoutsBSA Troop 201…

Age

You must be…

  • at least 10 years old, currently in fifth grade and register on or after March 1;

  • or have earned the Arrow of Light and are at least 10 years old;

  • or are age 11 or older;

  • but have not reached age 18.

Gender

Troop 201 is participating in the national Combined Troop program, which means we accept all youth regardless of gender. Troop 201 is a safe space that welcomes all forms of gender expression.

cost

Each Scout that participates in the program will incur the following costs every 12 months:

  • A registration fee collected by the national Scouting organization every 12 months. As of April 2024, this fee is $85 per 12 months.

  • An additional $10 fee for the Cradle of Liberty Council will be added to the registration fee collected by the national Scouting organization.

  • An optional $15 for Scout’s Life magazine, added to the registration fee by the national Scouting organization.

The fees noted above go toward running the Scouting program on the national level, plus the Cradle of Liberty Council which covers the entire Philadelphia area.

Troop 201 also collects $20 per Scout per month for the 10 months from September through June — $200 total — to cover operating expenses. These dues are collected in-person via Cash or Check, or can be paid online using Venmo. Families have the option of paying ahead on dues. We also offer financial assistance if needed.

The Scouts in the unit plan their own meals for weekend activities, and those costs are split evenly across the Scouts that attend the activity.

Some activities planned by the Scouts in the unit — such as Go-Karts, Skiing or the Indoor Water Park — may incur additional costs for those Scouts that choose to participate. Summer Camp is also an additional cost.

We encourage Scouts to obtain a uniform. There are a variety of ways to obtain a uniform that cost less than full retail price, such as eBay, thrift stores, or the selection of outgrown uniform parts that the troop maintains.

We run several fundraisers throughout the year to help defray the cost of Scouting.

Schedule

Troop 201 meets from 7pm to 8:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month in the church hall at Immaculate Conception Church, 604 West Ave, Jenkintown PA, 19046.

We also have a fun outdoor activity once a month from September through June, with larger, week-long activities (such as Summer Camp) in July and August. Our calendar is posted on the About Us page.

How to Sign Up

Volunteers

The ScoutsBSA program requires less involvement overall from parents and families than Cub Scouting, but it still takes volunteers to make it happen. There are opportunities for a wide range of interests and schedules. Scouting families are asked to help Troop 201 in one or more of a variety of ways…

  • By supporting our fundraisers: either by making purchases; helping to organize, plan, and advertise; or by contributing time or materials.

  • By helping to advertise the Scouting program and recruit new families.

  • By sharing their hobbies, professions, or faith by becoming a Merit Badge Counselor or Religious Emblems Counselor.

  • By participating in one or more of the fun activities to help provide adult supervision.

  • By joining the Troop Committee and helping to set the direction of the program at monthly meetings.

  • By helping to supervise and implement the program by getting trained as an adult leader and participating in the weekly meetings and monthly activities.

We have more information about how to become a volunteer on our Documents page, under “Parents And Adult Volunteers.”
